Chapter 10
Christmas Eve 2016
I woke and blinked, wondering what time it was.
It was still dark outside and my alarm clock on the bedside cabinet told me it was six thirty am.
But where was Austin?
It was strange waking up alone as he usually slept like a log.
Mooki was sitting up, staring at me.
I climbed out of bed, picked up the dog and trudged downstairs.
He was cooking. I could smell it.
What is your daddy playing at? I asked the dog.
She licked my nose.
I crept into the kitchen and set the dog on the floor.
Austin was standing at the kitchen island, his back to the door. The apron he wore didnât cover his naked arse.
âPhwooaarr,â I said, startling him. âYour bum looks good enough to eat.â
He spun round, and his eyes lit up. âI wanted to surprise you.â
âAnd you did.â I pointed. âI came downstairs to find my sexy man, naked apart from an apron, cooking me breakfast. Thatâs the type of surprise I like.â
âIâve cooked a bit too much Iâm afraid.â
âWell, itâs lucky Iâm starving then, isnât it?â I was anything but hungry, but he had gone to so much effort, I wasnât going to sound ungrateful.
âFull English breakfast it is then.â
âYes please,â I said.
âSit down and Iâll make some coffee.â
âWhy are you up so early?â
âCouldnât sleep and wanted to do something special for you, plus weâve got your parentsâ party tonight and I wanted to nip into town to get a few bottles of decent scotch.â
âThey donât expect anything.â
âI know, but I never turn up empty handed.â
He had his own way of doing things, so Iâd leave him to it.
He had indeed cooked too much, but it was delicious, and I found to my surprise, I was ravenous and polished a whole plate of food and copious amounts of coffee.
âThat was delicious.â
I leaned over to kiss him.
âGood, now if youâre done, Iâll sort these dishes then head into town before the rush starts.â
âYou go and shower and Iâll sort the dishes. I showered last night so donât need one, but Iâll come into town with you. Might get myself a new dress for tonight.â
âOh, no, I need to go on my own,â he snapped.
âWhy?â
He was red-faced. âLast minute shopping.â
âOh, okay.â
I felt like Iâd caught him in a lie but didnât want to push it.
âIâll only be a few hoursâ¦â
âItâs okay. Iâll call Pru and go with her.â
âOkay.â He kissed me on top of the head.
All those feelings came rushing back to me. Was I going to lose Austin too? He was lying about something, I knew that much.
