Chapter 10

Christmas Eve 2016

I woke and blinked, wondering what time it was.

It was still dark outside and my alarm clock on the bedside cabinet told me it was six thirty am.

But where was Austin?

It was strange waking up alone as he usually slept like a log.

Mooki was sitting up, staring at me.

I climbed out of bed, picked up the dog and trudged downstairs.

He was cooking. I could smell it.

What is your daddy playing at? I asked the dog.

She licked my nose.

I crept into the kitchen and set the dog on the floor.

Austin was standing at the kitchen island, his back to the door. The apron he wore didn’t cover his naked arse.

“Phwooaarr,” I said, startling him. “Your bum looks good enough to eat.”

He spun round, and his eyes lit up. “I wanted to surprise you.”

“And you did.” I pointed. “I came downstairs to find my sexy man, naked apart from an apron, cooking me breakfast. That’s the type of surprise I like.”

“I’ve cooked a bit too much I’m afraid.”

“Well, it’s lucky I’m starving then, isn’t it?” I was anything but hungry, but he had gone to so much effort, I wasn’t going to sound ungrateful.

“Full English breakfast it is then.”

“Yes please,” I said.

“Sit down and I’ll make some coffee.”

“Why are you up so early?”

“Couldn’t sleep and wanted to do something special for you, plus we’ve got your parents’ party tonight and I wanted to nip into town to get a few bottles of decent scotch.”

“They don’t expect anything.”

“I know, but I never turn up empty handed.”

He had his own way of doing things, so I’d leave him to it.

He had indeed cooked too much, but it was delicious, and I found to my surprise, I was ravenous and polished a whole plate of food and copious amounts of coffee.

“That was delicious.”

I leaned over to kiss him.

“Good, now if you’re done, I’ll sort these dishes then head into town before the rush starts.”

“You go and shower and I’ll sort the dishes. I showered last night so don’t need one, but I’ll come into town with you. Might get myself a new dress for tonight.”

“Oh, no, I need to go on my own,” he snapped.

“Why?”

He was red-faced. “Last minute shopping.”

“Oh, okay.”

I felt like I’d caught him in a lie but didn’t want to push it.

“I’ll only be a few hours…”

“It’s okay. I’ll call Pru and go with her.”

“Okay.” He kissed me on top of the head.

All those feelings came rushing back to me. Was I going to lose Austin too? He was lying about something, I knew that much.
